What is “deeply dug”? Is this 18”, 24” 36” or more? A neighbor told me in our area if you dig more than a foot, you will hit rock, so I assume this means I will be building up the soil depth. I’d really like to know a good depth to start out with. Thanks.

I am teaching everything here as a series, where I am building off other lessons. I go through double and triple digging in the November 25th issue.

I encourage people to try to loosen down to at least twenty four inches. If you have bedrock down twelve inches then just do what you can. What part of the world do you live in?

If you hit bedrock, raise the bed. Add to it each year. Soon you will have your 20”.

I live in Afton, TN in between Knoxville and the Tri Cities. Thanks - I’ll go check out the November 25th issue. I will be putting in a garden in a spot that gets the most sun on this property. I’m wrestling with cutting trees down to increase the sun exposure. No one has done anything on this property for decades so it has a lot of spectacular , huge trees. But it also is overrun with invasives.

Wow! I never knew you could do so much with cattails! I will be on the lookout for these in the spring.
